Saint Andrew's Church is a congregation of the one, holy, catholic, and apostolic Church, which began on the day of Pentecost after Jesus' resurrection, and which continues tothis day as the means by which God's work on earth is done. As a part of the Diocese of East Tennessee, and in communion with its Bishop, Saint Andrew's is a part of the Episcopal Church in the U.S.A., and thereby a part of the worldwide Anglican communion.

Pentecost (2007) - sometimes called Ordinary Time

Below: Icon of the Descent of the Holy Spirit on Pentecost

THE ICON

The icon of the Feast of Pentecost is known as "The Descent of the Holy Spirit". It is an icon of bold colors of red and gold signifying that this is a great event. The movement of the icon is from the top to the bottom. At the top of the icon is a semicircle with rays coming from it. The rays are pointing toward the Apostles, and the tongues of fire are seen descending upon each one of them signifying the descent of the Holy Spirit The building in the background of the icon represents the upper room where the Disciples of Christ gathered after the Ascension. The Apostles are shown seated in a semicircle which shows the unity of the Church. The golden nimbus around the heads of the Apostles in this icon are sometimes shown as small red tongues of fire in other versions. The scrolls being held by the Apostles represent the Gospels, as the Apostles participated both in the writing of the Gospels and carrying the Gospel message to all the earth. The scrolls also represent the teaching authority given them when they were commissioned by Christ.

In the center of the icon below the Apostles, a royal figure is seen against a dark background. This is a symbolic figure, Cosmos, representing the people of the world living in darkness and sin, and involved in pagan worship. However, the figure carries in his hands a cloth containing scrolls which represent the teaching of the Apostles. The tradition of the Church holds that the Apostles carried the message of the Gospel to all parts of the world. The figure is bent over or kneeling as a reflection of the effect of the sin of Adam on mankind. In the icon of Pentecost we see the fulfillment of the promise of the Holy Spirit, sent down upon the Apostles who will teach the nations and baptize them in the name of the Holy Trinity. Here we see that the Church is brought together and sustained in unity through the presence and work of the Holy Spirit, that the Spirit guides the Church in the missionary endeavor throughout the world, and that the Spirit nurtures the Body of Christ, the Church, in truth and love.

Collects & Prayers of Pentecost

Almighty God, on this day you opened the way of eternal life to every race and nation by the promised gift of your Holy Spirit: Shed abroad this gift throughout the world by the preaching of the Gospel, that it may reach to the ends of the earth; through Jesus Christ our Lord, who lives and reigns with you, in the unity of the Holy Spirit, one God, for ever and ever. Amen.

O God, who on this day taught the hearts of your faithful people by sending to them the light of your Holy Spirit: Grant us by the same Spirit to have a right judgment in all things, and evermore to rejoice in his holy comfort; through Jesus Christ your Son our Lord, who lives and reigns with you, in the unity of the Holy Spirit, one God, for ever and ever. Amen.

Blessed art Thou, O Christ our God, who hast revealed the fishermen as most wise by sending down upon them the Holy Spirit: through them Thou didst draw the world into Thy net. 0 Lover of Man, Glory to Thee (Troparion).

When the Most High came down and confused the tongues, he divided the nations. But when he distributed the tongues of fire, he called all to unity. Therefore, with one voice, we glorify the All-Holy Spirit! (Kontakion)

If you are a member of the parish, a former member who wants to keep up, or are interested in the health and well-being of the parish, you are invited to join. The process is simple and is done by following the links we provide here on this page. You can insert your email address in the box below and click the Yahoogroups button, or use the other links as listed, including to send messages to the list or to manage your subscription to the list. Be aware of the fact that when you subscribe, you may be asked who you are if your email address does not make it readily apparent or is unknown to the Webmaster. This is to prevent spammers from getting on this list and sending unwanted material to our listmembers. If the Webmaster doesn't know who you are, you won't be added to the group, and that is simply for the group's protection. We know you understand.
Please note that the host of the MAIL LIST is Yahoogroups, and St Andrew's Church bears no responsibility for any advertising; that is all there as placed by Yahoogroups, and is part of the price we pay for the group being free of charge.
